Preparing for Summer Travel with Medical Devices

Preparing for Summer Travel with Medical Devices

Posted by Spoonie Threads Staff on

Summer is the perfect time to get out, explore new places, and enjoy quality time with loved ones. But if you or a family member uses medical devices, travel can require a bit more planning. Whether it’s a feeding tube, insulin pump, port, or ostomy bag, traveling with medical needs doesn't have to be stressful. With some preparation and the right gear, your summer adventures can be safe, smooth, and fun.

Here are some essential tips to help you prepare:

1. Talk to Your Healthcare Team
Before heading out, schedule a quick check-in with your doctor or care team. They can provide travel letters, prescription refills, and advice tailored to your destination. Ask about:

  • Travel clearance (especially for flying)

  • Any necessary vaccinations or precautions

  • How to handle emergencies on the road

2. Pack Smart (and Early!)
Give yourself plenty of time to pack, especially if you need medical supplies that require special handling. Make a checklist of:

  • Medical devices and back-ups

  • Chargers and batteries

  • Medications (plus extras)

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Emergency contact info and documents

Use labeled bags or pouches to keep things organized. Adaptive accessories at Spoonie Threads, like our hoodies with the Spoonie signature kangaroo pocket or our double pocket belts, are great for keeping devices secure and accessible.

3. Know the TSA Guidelines
If you're flying, review the TSA's rules for traveling with medical devices. You can bring medically necessary liquids and supplies, but they must be declared at security. Consider:

  • Packing devices in your carry-on

  • Carrying a doctor’s note for easier screening

  • Requesting a private screening, if needed

4. Dress for Comfort and Access
Choose clothing that makes it easy to manage your devices. Adaptive wear like our Zip Access Hoodies, Raglan Access Tees, and Wrap Chest Access tops are designed with hidden openings, soft fabrics, and accessible features to make travel days more comfortable.

5. Plan for the Unexpected
Delays and detours happen! Bring more supplies than you think you’ll need, and map out hospitals or clinics near your destination just in case. It’s also helpful to:

  • Carry a medical ID card or bracelet

  • Keep a small kit of essentials in your carry-on or day bag

6. Stay Cool and Hydrated
Summer heat can be tough on the body and on medical devices. Try to:

  • Stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas

  • Keep devices out of direct sun

  • Drink plenty of water

Enjoy the Journey
With the right planning, your medical devices don’t have to limit your travel. Focus on what matters: making memories, exploring new places, and enjoying every moment. At Spoonie Threads, we’re here to support your adventures with adaptive styles that move with you.

Safe travels and happy summer!
