Giving Tuesday Selections from the Spoonie Threads family

Spoonie Threads supports Giving Tuesday as a day that encourages people to give back in whatever ways they can. Often groups can receive matching donations so it's really a great day to donate and give support.
We asked our Spoonie Threads' team members which non-profit organizations they support and would like to bring attention to on this day, here are their replies:

Dr. Julie Sanchez, Co-founder
  • Breast Cancer Susan G. Koman. Their mission is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Julie says " The foundation represents strength, unity and hope for women and their families. The walk remind me that we are not alone and together we can overcome this adversity."

Saba Kamaras, President
  • Razia’s Ray of Hope

This organization provides health education and schooling for girls and women in Afghanistan. They provide community-based education programs from primary school through professional training. This population requires even more support since the Tabilan reclaimed power in Afghanistan in 2021.
  • Malala Fund  Led by Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize winner and survivor of a Taliban attack, this organization supports education for girls in several countries around the world. They focus on countries where girls’ education has been hindered due to economic circumstances and patriarchal societal norms.
J. Spencer, Chief Operating Officer
  • Children’s International - Child sponsorship includes innovative community centers for medical and dental care, empowerment initiatives and education programs focused on giving children the support and tools they need to be healthy, stay in school, graduate and create a lasting change in their community.
    • My wife and I have been Children’s International sponsors for over 30 years.
  • American Cancer Society - The American Cancer Society is on a mission to free the world from cancer. They fund and conduct research, share expert information, support patients, and spread the word about cancer prevention.
    • My mother, father, and paternal grandparents all passed from some form of cancer.
  • American Heart Association - For nearly 100 years, the AHA has been fighting heart disease and stroke, striving to save and improve lives.
    • My mother and her father both suffered from heart disease from the time they were in their early 40’s. Both suffering major coronary events at the age of 48. Her father passed at the age of 60.

Courtney Harris, Marketing and Social Media Manager

  • PEAK Parent Center is a nonprofit that works every day to ensure that all people with disabilities are fully included in their neighborhood schools, communities, employment, and all walks of life. Courtney says: "This organization is a great resource, even for parents outside of Colorado. Their annual Inclusion Conference was a game changer for me to understand how to advocate for my disabled son."

Any non-profits you want to see highlighted? Give them a mention in the comments below and share why you support them.
